Hard maple wood grain sample

Hard Maple · Janka 1,450

Hard maple is the quiet achiever of our wood species lineup. Where white oak commands attention with its prominent grain and walnut dazzles with its rich color, maple earns respect through performance. Its tight, uniform grain produces the smoothest surfaces of any hardwood we work with — making it the ideal canvas for both bold stains and precision-sprayed paint finishes.

In our shop, maple is the wood we reach for when a project demands consistency: when every door needs to match, when stain absorption needs to be predictable, or when the design calls for a surface so smooth it approaches the feel of lacquer. It\u2019s the species behind some of our most sophisticated kitchens, including the Kalama Contemporary Kitchen and many of our custom built-in projects.

Species Profile

What makes maple exceptional

Tight, Uniform Grain

Hard maple features one of the tightest, most uniform grain patterns of any domestic hardwood. The smooth, consistent surface makes it ideal for both stained and painted finishes, absorbing stain evenly without the blotchiness that can plague softer woods.

Exceptional Hardness

On the Janka hardness scale, hard maple rates 1,450 — harder than white oak, walnut, or alder. This translates to exceptional resistance to dents, scratches, and daily wear. Kitchen cabinets in maple will look pristine years into their service life.

Light, Warm Tone

Maple’s natural color ranges from creamy white to light amber with subtle pink undertones. This inherent brightness makes it versatile — it can be left natural with a clear coat, stained to any depth, or used as a paint-grade substrate.

Full Stain Compatibility

Maple accepts all seven Cabworx stain colors beautifully: Natural, Drift, Dune, Hearth, Timber, Ember, and Forge. Its tight grain means stain application is predictable and even, with no need for pre-conditioning.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is maple good for kitchen cabinets?+
Hard maple is one of the best woods for kitchen cabinetry. Its exceptional hardness (Janka 1,450) resists dents and scratches, its tight grain absorbs stain evenly, and its light neutral tone works with virtually any design direction. It’s a staple species in our shop.
How does maple compare to white oak for cabinets?+
Maple is harder and has a more uniform grain than white oak. Oak has a more pronounced, open grain that adds visual texture. Maple tends toward contemporary and transitional styles; oak leans more natural and organic. Both are excellent — the choice depends on the grain character you prefer.
Can maple cabinets be stained dark?+
Yes. Maple’s tight grain allows it to accept dark stains like Ember and Forge evenly without blotching. Our eco-friendly spray process ensures consistent color penetration across every door and drawer front.
Does Cabworx offer maple cabinet samples?+
We provide physical samples of maple in all seven Cabworx stain colors during every consultation. Seeing the actual wood grain and finish under your kitchen’s lighting is the best way to make a confident decision.
