The Species
Why white oak is the premier choice for custom cabinetry
White oak (Quercus alba) has been a cornerstone of fine woodworking for centuries. Its closed-pore structure makes it naturally resistant to moisture, while its grain patterns — especially in rift and quartersawn cuts — create a visual texture unlike any other domestic hardwood.
At Cabworx, we source premium rift-sawn and quartersawn white oak for our cabinetry. Rift-sawn lumber is cut at 30–60° to the growth rings, producing a consistently straight, linear grain with minimal fleck. Quartersawn lumber is cut at 60–90°, revealing the medullary rays as distinctive “fleck” or “ray flake” patterns that give white oak its signature character.
Whether you choose a natural clear-coat, one of our curated stain finishes like Drift, Dune, or Timber, or pair white oak with painted accent cabinets, the result is always warm, sophisticated, and unmistakably real wood.

Properties
What makes white oak exceptional
Hardness
Janka hardness of 1,360 lbf — harder than red oak, cherry, or walnut. Resists dents and wear in high-traffic kitchens.
Moisture resistance
Closed-pore (tyloses) structure naturally resists moisture penetration — ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and bar areas.
Stability
Rift and quartersawn cuts minimize seasonal expansion and contraction, keeping doors flat and joints tight.
Aging gracefully
White oak develops a warm amber patina over time, deepening in character while maintaining its structural integrity.
